TDECU’s CEO retires from distinguished military career

Isaac Johnson concluded his 38-year Army career during an official Change of Command, Responsibility and Retirement ceremony held on July 13.

TDECU President and CEO Isaac Johnson has retired from his position as a two-star Major General in the U.S. Army Reserve.

During his military career, Johnson served deployments in Kuwait, Afghanistan, Haiti, Djibouti and South Korea, the credit union said in a press release Thursday.

Johnson earned the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Defense Superior Service Medal during his service.

“As a young man, I joined the military with the goal of making enough money to buy a car, but it grew into a deep love of country, an appreciation of those who have come before me, and a love of the Military Profession of Arms,” Johnson said in the release.

Johnson was named Lake Jackson, Texas-based TDECU’s President and CEO in April 2021. TDECU is Houston’s largest credit union and has more than 387,000 members and $4.8 billion in assets.

Johnson said the credit union is on a growth journey to expand across the state of Texas and beyond, and continued that strategy with a recent bank acquisition.

TDECU in May announced plans to acquire Many, Louisiana-based Sabine State Bank and Trust. The deal will expand TDECU’s lending to small-business owners in oil and gas, agriculture and energy as Sabine specializes in commercial loans in those spaces.

The credit union has 39 service locations, including 35 member centers.

In May, the credit union broke ground on what will be its flagship member center in Lake Jackson.

TDECU earned $5.3 million in the first quarter of 2024, a 24% increase compared with a year earlier, according to call report data from the National Credit Union Administration.

“My new goal is to make TDECU one of the top 20 credit unions in the country and to help our members realize their own financial dreams. We have a great many changes coming to our credit union, and I look forward to tackling this challenge.”
