Michael Baker, president and CEO of the $1.9 billion credit union based in Sumter, S.C., and his wife, Carrie, are in intensive care following a weekend crash.
The president and CEO of SAFE Federal Credit Union, one of South Carolina’s largest financial institutions, and his wife are hospitalized in serious condition following a motorcycle accident over the weekend in North Carolina.
Michael Baker and his wife, Carrie, are both being treated in the intensive care unit at Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C., according to a statement released by the credit union on Monday.
The couple was injured while traveling, though further details of the crash have not been disclosed.
“There are days when our SAFE Family and community must come together and today is one of those days,” the credit union said in a message posted to Facebook. “Michael is more than SAFE’s President and CEO. In addition to being a much-loved husband and father, he is a friend, leader, and trusted resource to so many SAFE employees and members.”

Founded in 1955, SAFE Federal Credit Union serves approximately 143,000 members and operates 19 branches. It is headquartered in Sumter and has $1.9 billion in assets. The credit union reported $13.9 million in earnings through June 30.
In its message, the credit union asked for prayers and support, noting the importance of faith to the Baker family. “We all wish him a full and speedy recovery though we know it will take time,” the statement read.
The institution also emphasized stability in Baker’s absence, stating, “SAFE’s executive team and board will ensure the credit union remains on course and true to its mission of service to our members and communities.”
Baker was named SAFE’s president and CEO in 2020. He succeeded Darrell Merkel, who served as President and CEO starting in March 2017.
