Search begins to replace longtime Virginia credit union CEO

After 13 years as the chief executive at Langley FCU, Tom Ryan announced that he will step down at the end of 2025.

Langley Federal Credit Union in Virginia is looking for a new leader.

The $5.4 billion-asset credit union said that longtime president and CEO Tom Ryan will retire at the end of the year.

In 2012, after 58 years of dedicated service, Jean Yokum retired and Ryan took the helm at Newport News-based Langley FCU.

“Serving as President and CEO of Langley Federal Credit Union has been the most rewarding experience of my career.” Ryan said in a release. “As I prepare for retirement, I am confident that Langley will build on the strong foundation we’ve created together to support Langley in its continued success for years to come.”

Langley has hired D. Hilton Associates to conduct a nationwide search for Ryan’s successor.

Bruce Hoogstraten, Board Vice-Chair and CEO Search Committee Chair, said Langley is looking for a leader who “not only possesses strategic expertise but also embraces the collaborative, team-oriented values that have been central to Langley’s success.”

During his tenure, Ryan oversaw the creation of the Langley for Families Foundation, a non-profit that has donated more than $7 million to local charities, assisting more than 160 organizations and reaching tens of thousands of people in the community.

In October, the credit union donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross supporting relief efforts for the communities severely impacted by Hurricane Helene.

Langley FCU serves its 391,000 members with 20 branches in Hampton Roads and Richmond, Virginia, and Raleigh, North Carolina. The institution’s membership has grown by 47% in the past five years.

The credit union earned roughly $13.4 million in 2024, a 50% decrease compared to a year earlier, according to call report data from the National Credit Union Administration.

“Tom’s dedication has transformed Langley into the strong organization it is today. His ability to foster a collaborative, high-performance culture has been exceptional, and we are grateful for his impact at Langley.”
