TruWest taps insider to be next chief executive

After working at the Tempe-based credit union for 12 years, Chris Kearney took the reins as its new CEO effective Sept. 30.

TruWest Credit Union in Tempe, Arizona, promoted Chris Kearney to be its new CEO.

Kearney joined TruWest in 2012 as senior vice president and chief information officer and was most recently the $1.8 billion-asset credit union’s president and chief information officer.

He replaces outgoing CEO Alan Althouse, who recently retired.

“Chris has consistently demonstrated his ability to drive innovation and inspire our teams to deliver exceptional service,” said Althouse in a press release. “After working closely with Chris over the past several years, I am confident that TruWest is in excellent hands.”

Althouse served TruWest for 20 years, including eight as its president and CEO.

During his time at the helm, TruWest experienced strong membership growth. The credit union’s membership stood at just over 76,000 in 2016 but is currently 90,399.

TruWest also moved into new headquarters earlier this year. The new office holds much of the company’s back operations, including loan processing and human resources, as well as its contact center.

TruWest Credit Union has 11 branch locations — eight in metro Phoenix and three in Austin, Texas.

“Our organization’s commitment to our members, employees, and community will remain at the forefront of everything we do as we continue to evolve and innovate in this fast-changing financial landscape,” Kearney said in the press release.

The credit union earned roughly $6.3 million in the first half of 2024, a 2% increase compared with a year earlier, according to call report data from the National Credit Union Administration.

One of TruWest’s Arizona peers made news Thursday.

The $3.3 billion-asset OneAZ Credit Union in Phoenix said it will acquire $600 million-asset 1st Bank Yuma, the banking subsidiary of Western Arizona Bancorp Inc.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with an incredible team and serving a dedicated membership base over the past two decades.”
