Following mergers, Alabama credit union rebrands with new “energy”
APCO Employees CU brought in 20,000 new members and $270 million of assets through two recent deals and felt the time for a rebrand was at hand.
APCO Employees Credit Union in Birmingham, Alabama, is rebranding as Southern Energy Credit Union.
The $3.5 billion-asset organization said the move reflects the company’s recent growth while reinforcing its dedication to powering the financial success of Southern Company employees, retirees, and their families.
The change also comes on the heels of the credit union’s mergers with both Powerco Federal Credit Union and Mutual Savings Credit Union, which took effect over the last two years and expanded its footprint across Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi.
In January, Southern Energy announced the completion of the merger with Atlanta-based Mutual Savings Credit Union, which had approximately $70 million in assets and more than 5,000 members.
Powerco FCU had more than $200 million in assets and roughly 15,000 members. That deal became official in April, 2023.
“Following the recent mergers, we were presented with an opportunity for our brand to better reflect our new collective membership and credit union team. Our commitment to members, especially those from long-time partners, is stronger than ever, and we wanted an identity that fully represented that continued commitment,” said President and CEO Derrick Ragland in a press release.
Southern Energy CU is Alabama’s largest state-chartered credit union by assets and has 29 branches. It is the second largest credit union in the state overall behind only $7.9 billion-asset Redstone FCU in Huntsville.
The credit union has more than 85,000 members and earned roughly $8.5 million in 2024, a 51% decrease compared to a year earlier, according to call report data from the National Credit Union Administration.
“From the name selection to the new colors and logo, our goal was for the rebrand to celebrate our recent growth and resonate with members who have been with us since our beginning, and those who are just getting to know us.”
