NCUA places Mississippi credit union into conservatorship amid safety concerns.

Jackson Area Federal Credit Union becomes the third institution conserved by regulators this year as pressure mounts on smaller lenders.

The National Credit Union Administration has placed Jackson Area Federal Credit Union into conservatorship, citing unsafe and unsound practices at the institution, in the latest sign of mounting regulatory pressure on smaller credit unions across the country.

The federally insured credit union, based in Jackson, Miss., will remain open and continue normal operations while the regulator works to address problems affecting the organization, the NCUA said Wednesday.

Jackson Area Federal Credit Union reported roughly $162.4 million in assets and 15,561 members in its most recent call report. The institution primarily serves employees and officials connected to the City of Jackson and Hinds County, though its membership has broadened over the years to include dozens of affiliated groups.

The move marks the third conservatorship initiated by the NCUA in 2026 and follows a string of enforcement actions involving smaller federally insured credit unions. On April 30, the agency liquidated People Trust Community Federal Credit Union after previously placing it into conservatorship in January. Regulators said that institution was also operating in an unsafe and unsound manner.

Earlier this spring, the NCUA liquidated Copper & Glass Federal Credit Union, saying the institution had no viable path to recovery. The regulator closed five credit unions in 2025.

Beyond the branch: Digital banking as a revenue engine.

For decades, financial institutions have treated digital banking as a cost center while branches were seen as the primary drivers of revenue. But with consumer behavior shifting toward digital-first interactions, this traditional mindset is no longer enough.

Read our exclusive whitepaper and explore how modern digital banking platforms can become strategic engines for growth, engagement, and measurable revenue.

Despite the conservatorship action, Jackson Area Federal Credit Union had remained profitable. The credit union earned about $135,500 in the first quarter of 2026 after posting net income of approximately $1.2 million in 2025.

The NCUA did not provide additional details about the practices or operational issues that led to the conservatorship. Under conservatorship, the agency assumes control of the institution in an effort to stabilize operations and protect members’ deposits.

Member accounts remain insured through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, which protects deposits up to at least $250,000. The NCUA said members would continue to have uninterrupted access to their funds, loans and everyday banking services.

The conservatorship underscores the growing challenges facing some smaller credit unions as regulatory scrutiny intensifies and operational pressures rise. While the broader credit union industry has generally reported stable financial performance, institutions with limited scale can face heightened vulnerability to compliance, liquidity and governance issues.

Jackson Area Federal Credit Union traces its roots to local government employees in Mississippi and expanded its field of membership in the early 1990s. The credit union now serves 38 distinct employee and community groups, according to federal records.

For now, the credit union’s main branch on Highway 18 in Jackson remains open as regulators evaluate next steps.
